This is part of the timetable of the Tokaido Shinkansen.  All journeys start from Tokyo.

Now answer these five questions.

No. 1  One of the trains on the timetable leaves Tokyo before 8:30 and arrives at Shin-Osaka after 11:30.

  Which is it?

No. 2  Of the three trains that stop at Maibara, which one arrives at Shin-Osaka between 11 and 12 o’clock?

No. 3  You want to attend a wedding which starts at 10:30 at a hotel in Nagoya.  It takes a quarter of an hour from the station to the hotel.

Which is the latest train you can catch from Tokyo?

No. 4  You must get to Shin-Osaka by 11:50.  You want to reserve a seat on one of the trains leaving Tokyo on or after 8 o’clock.  You have tried to get a seat on two trains, but all the seats on these trains have already been taken.

On how many other trains can you try to reserve a seat?

No. 5   The only train that stops at Gifu-Hashima is a slow one.  It is possible to save traveling time by leaving Tokyo later on a faster train and changing to the slow train in Nagoya to complete your journey.

Which is the latest train from Tokyo that will allow you to do this?

I got home from the office yesterday to find one of my kitchen windows broken, and glass all over the floor.  My first thought was that I had been robbed, because I knew that several houses in the neighborhood had been broken into in the past few days.  I was just about to check the drawer where I keep my money and other valuables, when someone rang the doorbell.  I went to see who it was and found my neighbor’s little boy standing there.  “Mr. Jones, Mr. Jones, can I have my ball back?” he said, pointing to a ball that was lying under the kitchen table.  I gave a big sigh and went to pick it up.

Question No.1  How did Mr. Jones feel before he saw the boy?  Choose the word which best describes his feeling from the list in the test book.

Question No. 2  How did Mr. Jones feel after he saw the boy?  Choose the word which best describes his feeling from the list in the test book.

Listen carefully to another story and answer the question which follows it.

My father asked me to meet an old school friend of his at the airport.  My father told me what his friend looked like, and I knew the flight number and the arrival time, but I was still a little nervous as I had not met this man before and I was not sure I would be able to recognize him in the crowd.  I even thought of writing his name on a piece of card and holding it above my head, but I need not have worried.  As the arriving passengers came through the gate, a well-dressed gentleman of about my father’s age approached me and said, “Hello, young man.  I’m Bill Thompson.  Are you waiting for me by any chance?”  I nodded.  He smiled and said, “I’d have known you anywhere.  It’s like looking at a picture of your father twenty years ago.”

How did the man know who the boy was when he saw him?  Answer in Japanese in the space provided.
